April 2010: Relay for Life

For over 24 hours, Theta Xi took time to celebrate, remember, and fight back for those who are either battling for have lost cancer. Brothers walked the track or helped man the campsite, helping sell concession items with all of the proceeds going to cancer research. This year's theme for UNCP's Relay for Life was "change the channel on cancer." Each Relay team had its own TV show; Theta Xi represented Tool Academy for the event. Theta Xi raised close to $300 for this event through campaign donations and items sold during the actual event. Many brothers have loved ones who are either battling cancer or have lost their lives to it, making their participation in this prestigious event much more meaningful.

March 2010: Full Moon Over Fashion

In what undoubtedly became one of the largest events ever hosted by the chapter, the brothers came together to host the first annual Full Moon Over Fashion event. This event was complete with students showing off the latest clothing lines by the hottest stores, and featured performances by several modeling groups. Well over half of the proceeds from this event went to benefit one of Theta Xi's two national philanthropies, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society. Close to 400 people showed up for this event, which not only raised hundreds of dollars for this great cause, but also saw entertainment not otherwise provided for on the UNCP campus.

March 2010: UNCP Day of Service

In late March, the brothers took time to participate in UNCP's annual Day of Service, an event in which student organizations from across campus come together to participate in a day of volunteerism and community service at selected service sites across the area. Theta Xi was assigned to volunteer at The Haven animal shelter in Raeford, NC; half volunteered on-site at the shelter while the other half helped fundraise for the shelter at Wal-Mart. The brothers had a great time participating in this campus-wide event, and giving back to the community at the community at the same time.

December 2009 and March 2010: Humane Society of Robeson County

As the semester came to a close, the brothers took time to support one of our local philanthropies, the Humane Society of Robeson County. At the humane society, we cleaned the cages, walked the dogs, assisted with the upkeep of the facilities, and insured that all animals had fresh food and water as well. Though taking care of the animals during the early morning hours of the weekend was a bit daunting to say the least, it was still a very rewarding experience in helping to take care of animals who need a good home. The brothers consistently rank this project as one of their favorites and enjoy returning to the shelter on an annual basis to help animals waiting to be adopted.

October 2009: The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society

This semester, the brothers supported a new philanthropy. Throughout the semester, the brothers raised money to support several brothers running in the Charlotte Thunder Road marathon in December. All proceeds raised went directly to support The Leukemia and Lymphoma Society. Many brothers have personal connections who have passed on due to strenuous battles with this disease or know of people who have been lucky enough to overcome the disease, and so raising money for this charitable cause meant a great deal more to us.

September 2009: Homeless for Habitat

For their required Alpha Nine project, the Fall 2009 Associate Member class followed in the footsteps of the previous years' Fall Associate Member classes in having a "Homeless for Habitat" event. This event, as the title might suggest, constitutes all eighteen Associate Members to camp out on the lawn right in front of the University Center for a 24-hour period. Accommodations include cardboard boxes and sleeping bags, with amenities such as shopping carts, cardboard signs, and the University's sprinkler system. As for meals? Those had to be given to the Associate Members by the campus community, because how can homeless people afford to pay for their own meals? Needless to say, these working conditions certainly paid off, as over $300 was raised for Habitat for Humanity.

National Philanthropies

Habitat for Humanity

Habitat for Humanity is an international, non-profit organization devoted to building "simple, decent, and affordable" housing. Homes are built using volunteer labor and are sold at no profit, with no interest charged on the mortgage. The organization was founded in 1976 in Americus, Georgia by Millard and Linda Fuller, whose vision grew out of their experiences at Koinonia Farm. The international headquarters located in Atlanta (moved from Americus GA in 2006) serves to support and promote the activities of local, independent affiliate chapters, which initiate and manage all construction, mortages, and homeowner selection.

 The National Multiple Sclerosis Society

The National Multiple Sclerosis Society, a United States-based non-profit organization, and its network of chapters nationwide promote research, educate, advocate on issues relating to multiple sclerosis, and organize a wide range of programs, including support for the newly diagnosed and those living with MS. Founded in 1946, the National Multiple Sclerosis Society supports more MS research, offers more services for people with MS, provides more professional education programs, and furthers more MS advocacy efforts than any other MS organization in the world.
